Michigan vs Penn State: Game Analysis

Michigan football celebrated Homecoming with a 21-18 victory over Penn State on Saturday at Michigan Stadium. A second-half quarterback change, a strong rushing attack and three defensive takeaways helped the Wolverines secure their first Big Ten win of the season in front of their home crowd.

Michigan struggled to find its rhythm offensively in the first half, recording just 80 total yards and entering halftime trailing 3-0. Looking to create a spark, head coach Kyle Whittingham turned to true freshman quarterback Tommy Carr to start the second half.

Carr's entrance immediately brought new energy to the Big House, with fans cheering as he took the field. His first completion to wide receiver JJ Buchanan helped get the offense moving, and Michigan began to build momentum after a quiet first half.

The turning point came early in the third quarter when defensive back Rod Moore intercepted Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht. Two plays later, Bryson Kuzdzal broke free for a 43-yard touchdown run, giving Michigan its first lead of the afternoon, 7-3.

The Wolverines kept that momentum going when Chris Bracy recorded another interception on Penn State's following possession. Carr then helped lead an 11-play, 74-yard scoring drive, highlighted by his 22-yard quarterback run that set up Jordan Marshall's 1-yard touchdown. Michigan entered the fourth quarter leading 14-3.

Penn State responded with a touchdown and two-point conversion to cut Michigan's lead to 14-11, but the Wolverines' defense came through again. Bracy forced a fumble that Enow Etta recovered, giving Michigan another opportunity to score.

Carr took advantage, rushing 12 yards into the end zone for his first career touchdown and extending Michigan's lead to 21-11 with less than three minutes remaining.

Penn State added a late touchdown, but Michigan recovered the ensuing onside kick to secure the Homecoming victory.

Carr finished 5-of-7 passing for 47 yards and totaled 83 yards of offense. Michigan recorded 211 rushing yards, including 174 in the second half, while holding Penn State to just 65 yards on the ground.

The win improved Michigan to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten play. The Wolverines will return to Michigan Stadium on Oct. 24 to face Indiana.
