Michigan Football Set to Host Penn State for Homecoming

Michigan football returns to the Big House on Saturday, Oct. 17, when the Wolverines host Penn State for the 2026 Homecoming game. Michigan enters its bye week at 3-2 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten play following a 20-14 loss at Minnesota.

The Wolverines have relied on their defense throughout the season. Earlier this year, Michigan held No. 11 Oklahoma to 10 points and limited the Sooners to just 3-of-13 on third down in a 17-10 victory. That defensive playmaking continued against Minnesota, as Smith Snowden and Nathaniel Staehling each recorded interceptions. Staehling returned his 79 yards for a touchdown, while Snowden’s interception helped set up Michigan’s other score.

Michigan’s passing game has found success through wide receivers Andrew Marsh and JJ Buchanan. Buchanan has been a major target for the Wolverines, recording 396 receiving yards and four touchdowns through the first four games, including 130 yards and two touchdowns against Iowa. Marsh recorded back-to-back 100-yard games against UTEP and Iowa, finishing with 106 yards against the Hawkeyes. Both receivers have also excelled on contested catches. Buchanan uses his 6-foot-3 frame and length to make plays over defenders, while Marsh combines strong route running with speed to get open and make difficult catches. Michigan will look to get its offense back on track after being held to 180 total yards and 11 first downs in Minneapolis.

Penn State brings its own playmakers to Ann Arbor. Quarterback Rocco Becht threw for 243 yards and a touchdown in the Nittany Lions’ most recent game against Northwestern. Becht has shown an ability to create explosive plays through the air, with eight of his 10 touchdown passes this season traveling at least 15 yards. Wide receiver Chase Sowell led Penn State with 68 receiving yards against Northwestern, including a 16-yard touchdown reception.

Defensively, Penn State linebacker Tony Rojas is coming off a career performance with 12 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack. The Nittany Lions have also forced nine turnovers through five games, setting up a matchup between a playmaking Penn State defense and a Michigan offense looking to establish consistency.

With both programs looking to gain momentum in Big Ten play, the Homecoming matchup provides Michigan an opportunity to respond at home following its bye week.
